Televisions and Fireplaces

The battle is as old as the television. Which should be the focal point of the family room: the television or the fireplace? While the fireplace is a more classic, more beautiful design element, function demands that furniture “aim” toward the television, creating a less elegant focal point.

A common solution: install the television above the fireplace. However, television purists insist on lower placement for the best viewing experience. Traditionally, installing the television higher than eye-level has been known to result in neck strain and less-than-ideal display performance.

As technology improves, so do television viewing angles. Harry Blanchard of Elite Home Technologies, the luxury division of HiFi House in the Philadelphia area, recently completed a project which included a Séura Premier Series television mirror above a fireplace. Having specified televisions above fireplaces for more than 10 years, Blanchard is convinced it’s the best solution. “It works great,” he said, “It is worse to ‘jam’ a TV into the corner of a room.”

Television Mirror above FireplaceLike it or not, topping that attractive high-end fireplace with a garish black box will not be the interior designer’s favorite idea. That’s where Séura comes in. Blanchard’s client requested a complicated cabinet with a lift to hide the television. When he suggested the vanishing television mirror above the fireplace, the client was sold.

“I find that if you show them the product, they will fall in love with it.” Blanchard said. Séura’s Premier Series 55" LED gracefully vanishes when powered off, allowing the homeowners’ prized trophy animals to rule the room! With zero technological distractions, the authentic fireplace is the focal point of the rustic space, resulting in a very happy client.

"TVs for fireplaces are common requests." said Hi Fi House president Jon Robbins, "Séura TV mirrors have proved to be the best solution for both client and HiFi House."

Shedding light on illuminated mirrors

Gretchen GilbertsonTen years ago, you probably thought selling lighting control and motorized shades wouldn’t touch the booming business of home theater. Today, Lutron lighting and shade control is a large portion of your business. Why bother with lighted mirrors? They may be your next big money maker.

Séura introduced lighted mirrors to bring elegance and ambient luxury to the A/V market. Ideal for bathrooms and complementary to Séura’s lines of television mirrors, Séura’s Lumination Collection offers a variety of etching patterns, light source options, and custom mirror sizes.

1) Specify your Mirror Size
While we offer standard sizes, more than 90% of our lighted mirrors are custom sizes for sophisticated solutions in luxury homes. Have a unique space or need a specific size and shape? Customizing is our specialty! Many of our solutions include multiple pieces, arch tops, elaborate frames, beveling, and various television mirror technologies.

Etching Patterns

2) Select an Etching Pattern
Séura partners with interior designers to formulate a collection of lighting patterns that are on trend with current directions in interior design. Varying from minimal to elaborate, clients can easily select a pattern which coincides with their vision.

Another consideration is functional versus ambient lighting. For example, the Lumin and Allegro designs offer direct lighting that shines on the subject making it brightly functional for makeup application. Other designs such as the Veda and Forte illuminate the wall behind the mirror, offering a beautifully ambient lighting element.

T5 and LED

3) Choose LED or Fluorescent Lighting
Both with dimming capabilities, LED and fluorescent lighting each have their benefits. LEDs are more energy efficient, nearly zero maintenance, and offer design flexibility. Fluorescent bulbs are less costly to purchase, need occasional replacement, and can sometimes be limiting in terms of bulb size for custom applications. Depending on your needs and budget, LED and fluorescent options provide the best solution for your application.

If you're still unsure, rest assured. At Séura, we understand lighted mirrors are outside your comfort zone of televisions and audio systems. Our customer service and technical experts are available to assist you every step of the way. Call toll-free 1-800-957-3872.
